Club manager.
Born at Brighton, England on 14 September 1934, he passed up the opportunity to study at Oxford after completing high school, choosing instead to follow his passion for food. He enrolled in a three-year chef apprentice program in Hove, England, then cycled to Basel, Switzerland to complete his studies.
He started his career at the Stockholm Opera House restaurant, and made Sweden his home for nine years. At that point, he accepted a position with the Liberian-American-Swedish Mining Company (LAMCO) in Liberia, Africa as catering manager in Nimba. There he met and married Ingrid Larsson, who shared his passion for travel and with whom he went on to have two daughters.
With Liberia as their home base, they had many adventures in East Africa, South America, and the USA. In 1970, they left Liberia (and regretfully, their chimpanzee, Jimmy), to return to Sweden. There, the couple owned and operated a grocery store, and opened Sweden’s first English pub. However, the family’s stay in Sweden was cut short when he accepted a job that would eventually become his calling: managing the Manitoba Club in Winnipeg, beginning in January 1971. Over the years, he received offers from various clubs across North America, but Winnipeg had become his home. He retired from the Club after 28 years of service and celebrated with a trip to Australia and New Zealand. He was a passionate member of the Winnipeg Rotary Club, founding member of the local chapter of the Chaine des Rotisseurs (an international gastronomy organization), and served as President of the Canadian Society of Club Managers for two years.
He died at Winnipeg on 1 January 2013.
