Born in England in 1856, he came to United States where he married Amy Bunn (1856-1925) and had three sons: Albert Edward Cooper (1885-1926), Archie Cooper (1889-?), and William Cooper (1891-?). The family moved to Winnipeg in the early 1890s and had two more sons: Clarence Alexander Cooper (1895-1974) and Norman Wallace Cooper (1897-1973). He worked as a general contractor, responsible for the construction of private residences around Winnipeg. He died at Vancouver, British Columbia on 22 March 1921 and was buried in the Elmwood Cemetery.
