Memorable Manitobans: Richard “Rick” Borland (1945-2021)

Athlete, civil servant.

Born at Winnipeg on 12 July 1945, son of Olga May McAdam (1917-2005) and Lloyd Stanley Borland (1906-1995), he attended Kelvin High School before attending the University of Manitoba, receiving a Civil Engineering degree, and the University of Waterloo, receiving a Master's degree in Transportation Planning. In 1967, he began a career with the City of Winnipeg, first as a Transportation Planning Engineer and, in 1980, as Director of Transit. In his youth, he won 18 Manitoba Open tennis titles then, in his late 20s, won 16 senior national squash titles. On 22 July 1967, he married Heather ? and they had two sons. He served as President of the Winnipeg Canoe Club (1987). He was inducted into the Tennis Manitoba Hall of Fame (2018). He died at Winnipeg on 7 July 2021.
