Memorable Manitobans: Elfriede Leopoldine Geier Berger (1916-2011)

Sculptor.

Born at Graz, Austria on 28 November 1916, she worked in the family gift shop from age 14 until she attended art school in her early 20s. In 1941, she met and married Hugo Berger (1913-1979) at Feldbach, Austria. They had a son, born in 1949, and the family came to Canada in 1953 and settled at Winnipeg. Her sculptures are displayed in Canada, United States, and Europe. Among her work was a bust of Winnipeg Mayor Steve Juba, German rocketry scientist Werner von Braun, and fairytale figures for Kildonan Park. She died at Winnipeg on 7 November 2011.
