Memorable Manitobans: Richard Halse Avent (1887-1960)

Surveyor.

Born in England on 3 July 1887, son of Richard Halse Avent (1860-1919) and Charlotte Catherine Eliza Poole (1870-1911), he came to Canada and, after a short time in the east, settled at Winnipeg. He served as City Surveyor until retirement (1916-1952). He was President of the Association of Manitoba Land Surveyors (1925-1926).

On 3 October 1914, he married Dorothy Hannah Bevan (1887-1953) at Winnipeg and they subsequently had four children: Gordon Halse Avent (1915-2001), Catherine Dorothy Avent (1920-1993, wife of James Norman William Budd), Unnamed Avent (1924-?), and Barbara Bevan Avent (1925-?, wife of ? Randall). He was a member of the Canadian Club and Rotary Club.

He died at his Winnipeg home, 1670 Wellington Crescent, on 2 March 1960 and was buried in the St. John's Cathedral Cemetery.
