Historic Sites of Manitoba: West Kildonan Royal Canadian Legion Hall / Montecassino Legion War Memorial (1748 Main Street, Winnipeg)

This two-storey brick and stucco building at the southwest corner of Main Street and Hartford Avenue in West Kildonan (now part of Winnipeg), measuring 40 feet by 60 feet, was designed by the local architectural firm of Moody and Moore. It was built in 1947 at a cost of about $25,000 as a meeting hall for the West Kildonan Branch No. 30 of the Royal Canadian Legion.

The building was officially dedicated and opened on 27 June 1947 at a ceremony attended by secretary of the Manitoba and North Western Ontario Command of the Royal Canadian Legion Alex Cairns, Reverend J. Rance, branch president W. J. A. Moffet, attorney general James Osborne McLenaghen, chairman of the dominion command of the Royal Canadian Legion Arthur Ernest Moore, Reeve and Mayor of West Kildonan Cecil Joseph Henry Lyon, district pensions advocate of the department of veterans affairs A. H. Yetman, and Angus MacLeod.

An addition was later made to the south side of the building along with modifications to the front facade which included moving the original entrance to the addition. At the time of 2023 and 2025 site visits, the building was slightly modified from its original appearance.

A monument first erected in October 2006 by the Montecassino Branch No. 178 at 605 Notre Dame Avenue, now closed, stands in front of the building. It commemorates the Montecassino Branch’s status as the Legion’s first branch.
