Born on 27 November 1875, he was a photographer at Winnipeg for 45 years, operating as Smiths Photo Studio at 405 Selkirk Avenue (1920s). He and wife Eugenia “Jennie” Derechin (1890-1970) had a son, William Derechin (?-1997). He died at the Winnipeg General Hospital on 15 October 1966 and was buried in the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery.
