Memorable Manitobans: Clemence Wescoupe [Ozaa Bines / Brown Thunderbird] (1951-2018)

Artist.

Born on the Long Plain First Nation on 14 June 1951, son of John and Alphonzine Wescoupe, he was passionate about drawing and art-making from childhood. After years of self-taught practice, by 1976 he was known for his signature style of flowing lines and stylized forms. He was a founding member of the Woodland School of Art, along with fellow artists Norval Morrisseau, Daphne Odjig, Carl Ray, and Jackson Beardy. His paintings were sold around the world and he exhibited his art across Canada. He died at the Portage General Hospital on 23 December 2018 and was buried in the Long Plain Cemetery.
