Memorable Manitobans: David Wells (c1897-1918)Conscientious objector. Born in England, he was a student at a Pentecostal school in Winnipeg in 1918 when he was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment for refusing to be conscripted. He was pronounced mad within a few days of his arrival at Stony Mountain Penitentiary, and died soon thereafter, many maintaining he had been brutally treated in prison. See also:
