Memorable Manitobans: George Wallace (?-1950)Engineer, veteran. Born in Scotland, he came to Canada in 1910 and joined the Reclamation Branch of the Manitoba Department of Public Works in 1912. A veteran of the First World War, he returned to the department in 1919 and served as a leveler. He later became Assistant Engineer (1921) and District Engineer (1937). He was made Drainage Engineer in the Provincial Highways Branch in 1944 and was Chairman of the Drainage Maintenance Boards of Manitoba (1947). A former resident of 1034 Palmerston Avenue, he curled in the Granite Club, acted as Grand Master of Patricia Lodge 125 and served Home Street Church as Chairman of the Board of Stewards. He and his wife Margaret Isabell Gibson, whom he married on 27 December 1922 in Winnipeg, shared three children: William, Bruce, and Peggy. On 1 July 1950, he died of a sudden heart attack at Fort Frances, Ontario where he was visiting. He was buried in Brookside Cemetery.
