Memorable Manitobans: Alan Lewis “Al/Pappy” Vickery (c1917-2006)Journalist. Born at Winnipeg around 1917, during the later stages of the Second World War, he worked in public relations for the Canadian Army and was a staff writer for the Army newspaper, The Maple Leaf. In 1946, he began working for the Canadian Press at Toronto (Ontario), rising to become Senior Editor of its Winnipeg bureau. In October 1960, he was appointed Assistant News Director of Winnipeg's newlyly established CJAY television station. He later worked at KCND-TV and ended his television career at CKND-TV. In the 1980s, he was a columnist for the Winnipeg Free Press. He was inducted into the Manitoba Sportswriters Media Roll of Honour (1988) and the Blue Bombers Media Roll of Honour (1998). On 6 July 1949, he married Janet Christina Claire Beckwith (1925-2017) and they had a daughter and six sons. He died at the Grace Hospital on 7 July 2006.
