Memorable Manitobans: Petrus Hubertus “Peter” Vernaus (1929-2009)Businessman, racing enthusiast. Born in The Netherlands on 25 July 1929, he came to Winnipeg in 1953 and opened an autobody shop. In 1972, he built Winnipeg Speedway and became an icon in the city’s racing community. He brought many racing events including the World of Outlaws and NASCAR to the city.
