Memorable Manitobans: Thomas Alvin Van Vliet (1856-1930)Businessman. Born at Lacolle, Quebec on 17 November 1856, he came to Winnipeg in 1879 and worked in partnership with Archibald Francis Wright to establish the Winnipeg Saddlery Company, succeeding Wright as its President in 1900 and serving until his death. In 1895, he married Catherine Smith (1863-1953) of Chatham, Ontario and they had three children: William Birt Van Vliet (1896-?), George Lyman Van Vliet (1898-1981), and Dorothy Margaret Van Vliet (1901-?). He was a member of the AF and AM (Landmark Lodge). He died at his Winnipeg residence, 86 Balmoral Street, on 31 December 1930 and was buried in the Elmwood Cemetery. See also:
