Memorable Manitobans: Thomas Bennett Tomes (1856-1913)
Farmer, municipal official.
Born at Leamington Spa, England on 1 December 1856, he emigrated to Canada in 1882 and purchased the land section SW15-16-13 southwest of Plumas, Manitoba. He farmed and, in later years, he was a grain buyer. On 10 April 1889 he married Jane Anne Watson of Alston, England. They had eight children: Alfred, Robert, Caroline, Frank, Walter, Marion, Alice, and Fanny. He served for many years as Reeve of the Rural Municipality of Lansdowne. In this capacity he attended the 1905 founding meeting, in Brandon, of the Union of Manitoba Municipalities. He was also a director of the Neepawa hospital.
He died at Westbourne on 26 May 1913.
