Memorable Manitobans: Richard S. Thomson (1857-1933)Miller. Born at Scarborough, Ontario on 8 September 1857, son of Smith Thomson, he worked on the family farm and in a local planing mill until 1879 when he came to Manitoba and settled at Portage la Prairie. He worked first as an accountant in a real estate firm then became secretary of the Portage la Prairie Milling Company. When in 1891 the company was absorbed by the Lake of the Woods Milling Company, he became manager of the Portage office. On 29 September 1881 he married Janet Macgregor of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. They had six children: Frank, Mabel, Fred, Keith, Ella, and Douglas. He died at Portage la Prairie on 2 May 1933.
