Memorable Manitobans: Gisli M. Thompson (1863-1908)

Printer, publisher.

Born in Iceland in 1863, he married Monica Helga Fridbjornsdottir in 1891. They had six children, including one adopted daughter. He homesteaded north of Gimli. In 1891 he established a printing press at Gimli and was printer and publisher of three periodicals: Dagsbrun (Dawn) incollaboration with Magnus Skaptason; Svafa;Bergmalid (The Echo) in collaboration with Gudni Thorsteinsson.

He served as Reeve of Gimli municipality from 28 July 1896 to the end of the year.

Thompson died on 3 September 1908.
