Memorable Manitobans: Hryhorij Tarasiuk (1895-1982)Ukrainian activist. Born in Perevodiv, Sokal, Ukraine, he was recruited into the Austrian army, subsequently joining the Ukrainian army (Halychyna Division, Fifth Sokal Brigade), where he fought for Ukrainian independence from 1918 to 1922. He came to Canada in 1929, serving in the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders in World War Two. Employed for many years by Ontario Hydro in Kapuskasing, he came to Winnipeg upon his retirement in 1966, becoming very active in the Ukrainian-Canadian community in the city. He was a founding member of the Carpathia Credit Union and recipient of an award from the Ukrainian Canadian Committee for his contributions to Ukrainian culture.
