Memorable Manitobans: Roman Swiderek (1936-2020)

Artist.

Born at Lodz, Poland on 23 August 1936, he studied embroidery and printing before coming to Canada with his family in 1961 and settling at Winnipeg. Between 1965 and 1989, he founded four companies with a design focus for the fashion industry, including the Roman Embroidery Gallery (132 Osborne). He began to focus on art in 1989 and was known for his portraits and landscapes, especially a large collection of Winnipeg cityscapes. A calendar featuring a dozen of his watercolour paintings relating to the 1997 Winnipeg flood, issued in 1999, raised funds for flood relief. He died at Winnipeg on 8 April 2020.
