Memorable Manitobans: Thomas Swales (1836-1909)Farmer. Born in Yorkshire, England, on 1 March 1836, he married Eliza Little and they had four children. He came to Ontario, and from there to Manitoba in September 1879. He bought a farm three miles north of Portage la Prairie, where he built the first frame house between Portage la Prairie and Lake Manitoba.
