Memorable Manitobans: John Sutherland (1860-1943)
Born in Scotland in 1860, he came to Canada in 1880 but moved at some point to the United States where three of his children were born. He returned to Canada in 1910 and worked in general contracting as proprietor of the Sutherland Construction Company until retirement around 1929-1930. He and wife Helen Jane McIvor (1875-1958) had four children: John Nicholson Sutherland (c1892-?), George McIvor Sutherland (c1903-?), Helen ? Sutherland (c1908-?), and Robert Nicholson Sutherland (1913-?). The family lived at 38 Guelph Street. He died at Santa Monica, California on 4 April 1943 and was buried in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park at Glendale, California.
