Memorable Manitobans: John Sutherland (1860-1943)

Building contractor.

Born in Scotland in 1860, he came to Canada in 1880 but moved at some point to Chicago, Illinois. He returned to Canada in 1911 and worked in general contracting as proprietor of the Sutherland Construction Company until retirement around 1929-1930.

He was married twice, first to Jane Magee (c1862-1895) with whom he had two children: Catherine Linton Sutherland (1889-1977, wife of Clive Jeffrey Macleod) and John Nicholson Sutherland (1891-1987). With his second wife Helen Jane McIvor (1878-1958) he had three children: George McIvor Sutherland (1903-?), Helen Sutherland (1908-?), and Robert Nicholson Sutherland (1913-?). The family lived at 178 Cathedral (c1911), 115 Machray (c1916), and 38 Guelph Street.

He died at Santa Monica, California on 4 April 1943 and was buried in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park at Glendale, California.
