Memorable Manitobans: Kristin Johnson Smith (1899-1982)

Educator.

Born in Iceland on 2 October 1899, daughter of Bjarni Johnson (?-?) and Bjorg Emelia Johnson (?-?), she immigrated to Canada, resided in the Baldur area, and became a teacher. On 22 August 1935, she married John Archibald Smith (1876-1967) at Winnipeg. They had a son, J. D. Smith. She was a longtime teacher (1945-1964), District Principal (1948-1955, 1957-1959), and Principal (1959-1964) of Mapleton School. In 1964, she retired and moved to British Columbia with her spouse. She died at the Vancouver General Hospital on 21 January 1982 and was buried locally in the Mountain View Cemetery.
