Memorable Manitobans: Charles William Sing (1913-1975)

Lawyer.

Born at Portage la Prairie on 4 September 1913, son of Chan Sing (1883-1962) and Ellen Elliott (1892-1977), he was educated at Portage elementary schools and the Portage Collegiate Institute. He articled in law with the firm of Miller and Miller and was called to the Manitoba Bar in June 1940. He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1943 to 1945 and, after the Second World War ended, he returned to his law practice at Portage la Prairie. He was made a Queen’s Counsel (1960). In 1943, he married Irene May Treleaven (1913-1988) and they had a daughter and a son. He served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Manitoba Urban Trustees Association and Commissioner of the Manitoba North Western Ontario Provincial Council of the Boy Scouts Association. He was a member of the Jaycees, Portage and District Chamber of Commerce, Portage Lions Club, Progressive Conservative Association of Portage la Prairie, and St. Mary’s la Prairie Anglican Church. He died at Portage la Prairie on 16 July 1975 and was buried in the Portage Hillside Cemetery.
