Memorable Manitobans: Klaas R. Reimer (1837-1906)

Businessman.

Born in Rosenort, Molotschna, Russia, he came to Steinbach, Manitoba in 1874 with the Kleine Gemeinde Mennonites. In 1877 he opened a store in his log house, and by 1880 was investing in a flour mill and a lumberyard. By 1885, he and his family controlled two blocks of downtown Steinbach, running three general stores, four cheese factories, a sawmill, and most of a flour mill. By the end of the century, the Reimer family paid almost half of Steinbach’s taxes. Reimer later opened a large greenhouse operation and an irrigation system.
