Memorable Manitobans: Peter Pidskalny (1945-2017)

Cleric, educator.

Born at Ethelbert on 27 July 1945, son of John and Mary Pidskalny, he graduated from St. Vladimir’s College in June 1963 and entered the Redemptorist Novitiate at Meadowvale, Ontario. He professed his first vows as a Redemptorist in August 1964. He was ordained to the priesthood in May 1972 and his first assignment was to St. Mary’s Parish at Yorkton, Saskatchewan (1972-1973). He studied at the Faculty of Education at the University of Manitoba and the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Saskatchewan. From 1975 to 1996, he was a professor at St. Vladimir’s College where he taught mathematics, Ukrainian, general sciences, and computer science. He also served as Principal (1978-1981, 1983-1994), Director (1994-1995), and Spiritual Director (1995-1996). For 12 years he served the parishes of Benito and Swan River, and for eight years the parishes of Russell and Petlura. From 1996 to his death, he served at parishes in Saskatchewan. He died at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on 15 October 2017 and was buried in the Holy Family Cemetery.
