Memorable Manitobans: Alfred Pickering (1850-1932)

Farmer, lumber merchant, municipal official.

Born in Ontario on 12 November 1850, he and his wife Christina Oswald (1853-1940) came to Austin in 1881 and homesteaded southwest of the growing settlement. They farmed for a few years then relocated to Austin where he was a lumber merchant, an agent and executor for local residents, a Justice of the Peace, and Reeve of the Rural Municipality of North Norfolk (1889-1890). He died at his home in Austin on 6 March 1932 and was buried in the Austin Cemetery.
