Born at Winnipeg around 1950 to Mildred Anne Magwood (1921-2001) and Henry James “Tampy” Smith (1924-1999), she had a multi-faceted career, working variously as a doughnut cook, an aide at the St. Amant Centre, a realtor, a beer waitress, a bartender, and manager of the Winnipeg Press Club. She was also for several years editor of the Icelandic weekly newspaper, Lögberg-Heimskringla.
In 1980, she married journalist Thomas Tryggvi “Tom” Oleson and they went on to have four children. She enjoyed summer visits to Clear Lake, and every year faithfully attended “Islendingadagurinn,” the Manitoba Icelandic Festival in Gimli, with her family.
