Memorable Manitobans: George Raphael Munroe (c1944-2026)

Indigenous leader.

A veteran of the Royal Canadian Navy, he helped to establish the Manitoba Indian Brotherhood in 1967. He served on the Winnipeg City Council (1971-1974). He was Chief Executive Officer of Sagkeeng First Nation (1993), an Elder at Yellowquill College, a member of the Elder's Council of the Circle of Life Thunderbird House, Vice-President of the Aboriginal Council of Winnipeg, and Executive Director of the Indian and Metis Friendship Centre. In 1988, he married Gloria J. Wright (?-2010). He died at the Grace Hospital on 17 February 2026.
