Memorable Manitobans: Gladys Edna Harriet Millard (1891-1964)

Educator.

Born at Somerset, England on 3 June 1891, daughter of Eliza Ann Bailey and William James Sydney Millard, her parents died before she was 18 and she was adopted by psychiatrist Dr. Herford. She studied Biology at the University of London but her studies were interrupted by the First World War.

After the war, she moved to Winnipeg where she was Principal of Rupert’s Land Girls’ School (1928-1937) and Head of the Science Department (1928-?). At her departure, she was given a farewell dinner at the Fort Garry Hotel on 26 May 1937, after which she left to become Principal at Havergal College in Toronto, Ontario. She spent 12 years there and was confined to a wheelchair for the last few years.

She retired to Victoria, British Columbia where she died on 15 October 1964.
