Memorable Manitobans: James F. C. Menlove (1871-?)Born in England on 19 August 1871, son of James Charles and Myra Emelia Menlove, he was educated at London, where he studied dentistry. He emigrated to Canada and engaged in business as a contractor. He came to Virden, Manitoba in 1889. He served as President of the Union of Manitoba Municipalities from 1909 to 1910. He drew up and introduced a system of municipal accounting that was later adopted by the provincial government for all municipalities. In 1911, Menlove was county treasurer, secretary and county court clerk at Virden, Manitoba. He moved to Winnipeg in early 1912, to take a position as Branch Manager of the Dominion Guarantee and Accident Company. He later became president of the Northwestern Life Assurance Company. On 10 July 1895, at Virden, he married Clara Austin (1880-1940), daughter of Alexander Austin of Austin, Manitoba. They had three sons (Claude Francis Campbell Menlove, Orval Phillip Austin Menlove, Jerry Menlove) and four daughters (Doris Myra Menlove, wife of J. M. Spiers; Mrs. D. D. Shaw, Mrs. A. MacHutchon, Mrs. A. D. McQuarrie). He was a member of the AF & AM (Blue Lodge and Scottish Rite). His recreations included rowing and gardening.
