Memorable Manitobans: Archibald McPherson (1864-?)

Farmer.

Born in Sydney Township, Ontario on 25 August 1864, son of James McPherson and Agnes Morton, he quit school at the age of 14 to work on a neighboring farm. At 23 he farmed on rented land until coming to Manitoba in 1899 and buying 160 acres, which became the nucleus of his land holdings. Eventually, he farmed 480 acres on Sections 2, 3 and 10 in Townships 16 and 18, Range 18, growing crops and raising horses, cattle and swine. On 12 December 1900, he married Elizabeth McFarland at Minnedosa. They had four daughters: Agnes McPherson, Jessie M. McPherson, Norma McPherson, and Elizabeth E. McPherson. He served as a councillor for the Rural Municipality of Clanwilliam, and was a member of the Canadian Order of Foresters and Presbyterian Church.
