Memorable Manitobans: Nicholas Charles “Nick” Martin (1948-2025)

Journalist.

Born at Jarrow-on-Tyne, England on 11 August 1948, son of Florence and Nicholas Martin, the family moved to Canada in 1952. He grew up at Georgetown, Ontario and attended York University where his interest in journalism grew as a result of writing for the student newspaper. In 1971, he began a professional career in journalism at the London Free Press. In 1989, he joined the Winnipeg Free Press and working there until retirement in June 2018. He and his wife moved to Victoria, British Columbia in 2020. He died while on holiday at Edinburgh, Scotland on 15 October 2025. He was survived by a wife and two children.
