Memorable Manitobans: Joseph Kobzar (c1895-1991)

Businessman, community activist.

Born in Ukraine around 1895, he served in the Austrian and Ukrainian National Armies in the First World War, before coming to Canada in 1924, where he engaged in numerous businesses in Winnipeg. He was active in the Ukrainian community, being a member of St. Mary the Protectress Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral, a branch executive of Ukrainian War Association since 1928, the treasurer of the Winnipeg Branch of the Ukrainian National Federation, the Ukrainian Fraternal Society of Canada, which he served as President for thirty-five years. He received four Merit Awards for his service and dedication from UNF Winnipeg Branch, as well as awards from the Ukrainian Congress Committee, Ukrainian Fraternal Society of Canada, and Shevchenko Foundation. He died at Winnipeg on 4 February 1991.
