Born at Plymouth, England on 3 November 1862, he came to Canada in 1884 and worked as a building contractor at Winnipeg.
He and wife Elizabeth Ann Woolcock (1863-1942) had five children: Lilian Joan Ireland (1887-1972, wife of Albert Henry Simpson), George Reginald Ireland (1889-1950), William John Ireland (1892-1921), Edith May Ireland (1896-1971, wife of Clement Edward Williams), and Frank Harold Ireland (1898-1966). The family lived at 800 Bannatyne Avenue (circa 1921).
He died at East Kildonan on 22 February 1940 and was buried in the Elmwood Cemetery.
