Memorable Manitobans: Wilfred Finley Graham Hughes (1891-1957)

Born at Carleton Place, Ontario on 1 July 1891, he moved to Chicago, Illinois where he worked on the catalogue for Sears Roebuck. He then moved to Regina, Saskatchewan where he completed an apprenticeship as a printer with the Regina Leader newspaper. During the First World War, he enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force and served overseas with the 22nd and 25th Batteries, 6th Brigade.

After the war, he returned to Regina and worked in the Leader-Post composing room for 15 years and later worked at the Regina Star. In 1933, he moved to Transcona and established a weekly newspaper called the Transcona and Eastern Manitoba News and he operated until his death. He was a member of the Canadian Weekly Newspapers' Association and Manitoba Weekly Newspapers' Association.

On 4 August 1925, he married Marion R. Maybee (?-?) at Regina, Saskatchewan. They had two sons. The family lived at 123 Rosseau Avenue. He served on the Transcona School Board and was a member of the Masons (Transcona Lodge) and Transcona Memorial United Church.

He died at Transcona on 6 January 1957 and was buried in the Elmwood Cemetery.
