Memorable Manitobans: William Hern (1848-?)Farmer. Born at Exeter, England on 31 March 1848, son of Thomas Hern and Elizabeth Manning, the family emigrated to Canada and settled on a farm in Perth County. He quit school at the age of 16 to work on the family farm until 1881 when he came to Manitoba where he farmed 320 acres in Sections 25 and 26, Township 13, Range 24 near Hamiota. On 15 January 1875, he married Rebecca Brethour. They had seven children: Rebecca A. Hern, J. Wesley Hern, Sidney A. Hern, William Lorne Hern, David J. Hern, Samuel C. B. Hern, and Gilbert S. Hern.
