Memorable Manitobans: John Haldane (c1775-1857)Fur trader. Born in Scotland and came to Canada to join the XY Company around 1798. In 1804 he became a partner in the North West Company. He was stationed at various Company posts in the north-west, and when the two Companies united in 1821 he became a Chief Factor and was put in charge of the Columbia district. In 1823 he returned east and took charge of the Lake Superior district. He disagreed with George Simpson and resigned in 1826 to return to Scotland.
