Memorable Manitobans: Arthur Thomas “Tom” Hainsworth (1901-1977)
Born near Deloraine on 2 May 1901, son of Arthur T. Hainsworth (1872-1934) and Annie Jane Richard (1875-1969), he served as a Councillor (17 years) and Reeve (1915-1921, 1948-1971) of the Rural Municipality of Winchester for several years and President of the Union of Manitoba Municipalities in 1966 and 1967. He also served as President of the the Deloraine Agricultural Society and Deloraine Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the Deloraine Hospital Board, Trustee of the Deloraine School Board, President of the Manitoba School Trustees Association (1931-1933), Vice-Chairman of Bren-Del-Win Lodge, and a member of the local United Grain Growers (Secretary), Manitoba Good Roads Association, PFAA Board of Review, Turtle Mountain Resource Conservation Board, and Westman Advisory Board. He received a Manitoba Good Citizenship Award in 1973. Known for his “ready wit, happy smile, and hand-shake,” he died at Deloraine in November 1977. He was inducted posthumously into the Manitoba Agricultural Hall of Fame.
