Memorable Manitobans: Kenneth Alvin “Ken” Grove (1939-2005)

Golfer, curler.

Born at Winnipeg on 25 March 1939 to Lorna and Bill Grove, he moved with his family to Selkirk when he was nine, and remained a resident there throughout his life. He was employed as an electrician with the Province of Manitoba until 1988, when health reasons forced him to take early retirement.

In his younger years, he played baseball, pool, and hockey, but his later passions were golf and curling, and he won many golf tournaments and curling bonspiels over the years. In 2000, he represented Manitoba at the Canadian Seniors Curling Championships, and skipped his team to victory at the Canadian Masters in 2002. He taught his granddaughter to curl and had her play lead for him in a bonspiel when she was only five.

He died on 9 July 2005 and was buried in the St. Clement’s Anglican Cemetery.
