Memorable Manitobans: Robert Henry “Bob” Gordon (1932-2016)

Livestock breeder.

Born at Oak Lake on 13 November 1932, son of Henry Wilbert Gordon (1904-1973) and Ella Elizabeth Ronberg (1906-2002), his passion for livestock began in 4-H, where he won the first John Norquay trophy for beef showmanship and once travelled 1,500 miles in a rail boxcar to exhibit steers at the Toronto Royal Show. He was a visionary leader in the Canadian beef industry, widely recognised for his pioneering work in cattle genetics and breed improvement.

In 1955, he moved to Souris where he and his brother Wayne Gordon eventually formed Kinnaber Cattle Company. He became a legendary figure in the Shorthorn community after purchasing the white bull “TPS Coronet Leader 21st”, a move that sparked a new era for the breed. His excellence in breeding was cemented by winning the Grand Champion Female title at the prestigious National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado for three consecutive years (1969-1971). For these contributions, he was honoured as the “Builder of the Shorthorn Breed” in 1970.

His influence extended far beyond a single breed. In the late 1960s, he anticipated the need for continental breeds in Canada, becoming the first president of Bar-5 Simmentals and initiating the importation of Simmental cattle from Europe. He established high-quality Hereford and Angus herds with his family, logging thousands of miles to attend shows across Canada. In 1985, he was appointed Sire Selector and Manager of the Beef Program for Western Breeders and Alta Genetics, where his “astute cattle knowledge” allowed him to identify breed-leading sires across the globe.

A firm believer in the next generation, he initiated the formation of the Canadian Junior Hereford Association and the Manitoba Young Cattle Producers’ Award. His lifelong dedication was celebrated with inductions into the Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame (1995) and Manitoba Agricultural Hall of Fame (2007).

In 1959, he married Joyce Honeyman and they subsequently had five children.

In his later years, he and his wife wrote about their cattle knowledge in the book A Cattleman’s Walk Down Memory Lane (2003) before retiring to Boissevain in 2008. He passed away there on 29 July 2016.
