Memorable Manitobans: James Robert “Jim” Gervin (1870-1939)

Farmer, municipal official.

Born at Peterborough, Ontario on 4 September 1870, in 1895 he married Florence Alberta Stabler (1875-1947) and they came to a farm near Medora in 1899. They had seven daughters and one son: Elsie Gervin (1896-1989, wife of John MacDonald), Winnifred Gervin (?-1906), Phyllis Gervin (1897-?, wife of Fraser Johnston), Edith Gervin (1902-1988, wife of John Henderson), Isobel Gervin (1904-1983, wife of R. M. Hunter), Alton James Gervin (1908-?), Amy Gervin (1911-1964, wife of Alban H. Norton), and Dorothy Gervin (?-1981, wife of R. H. Burry). He served as Reeve of the Rural Municipality of Brenda (1912-1917) and was a member of the Loyal Orange Lodge (Worshipful Master, 1912, 1914; Grand Master of Manitoba, 1931-1932) and Masons (Napinka Lodge). In 1935, he was appointed to the first advisory council of the newly-established Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration. He died at his farm on 18 May 1939 and was buried in the Medora Cemetery.
