Born at Forrest, Ontario on 5 September 1885, one of four children of George Ransom Germain (1857-1913) and Elizabeth Germain (1861-1941), he and his family moved to Winnipeg around 1906 where he worked as a general contractor. In February 1918, he enlisted in the Fort Garry Horse. After his military discharge he continued to work as a general contractor around Winnipeg. He died on 23 February 1956 and was buried in the military section of Brookside Cemetery
