Memorable Manitobans: Georges Germain (1850-1930)

Merchant, civil servant.

Born at Ottawa, Ontario on 20 October 1850, son of Nazaire Germain, he was educated at St. Joseph’s College. He worked in business partnership with his father until coming to Winnipeg in May 1875 and operating a hardware store at the corner of Bannatyne and Main Street, under the name of N. Germain and Son. He then operated a grocery and liquor store at Emerson in 1880 and 1881. The following year he kept the Windsor Hotel at West Lynne and, still later, the St. Lawrence Hotel at St. Boniface. He entered the provincial civil service in January 1883, as Record Clerk in the Department of the Provincial Secretary, and Postmaster of the Legislature. He worked in the office of the King’s Printer until retirement in 1918. He died at St. Boniface, Manitoba on 20 April 1930 and was buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
