Memorable Manitobans: Raymond Victor “Ray” Fetterly (1929-2005)

Conservation officer, author.

Born in Manitoba on 26 December 1929 to Alma Gertrude Ward (1895-1977) and Gordon Rupert Fetterly (1889-1948), he had an adventurous career as a conservation officer in Manitoba, completing his service with ten years work with Crown Lands Agriculture. His conservation experiences are reflected in the four books he wrote: A Ranger Alone–Experiences of a Young Park Warden (1992), Mighty Men of the Forest (1995), Guardians of the Wilderness (1996), and A Ranger Alone II (1997). He contributed to the community with 14 years service as a Cub leader and many years as a Rotarian. He died at Selkirk on 11 October 2005. With his wife Patricia Ann Giesbrecht (1938-2017), he had two children.
