Memorable Manitobans: Margie Anne Fallis (1943-2025)

Social worker.

Born on 15 June 1943, daughter of Iva Isabel Sharpe (1914-2009) and Harold Alvin Fallis (1913-1988), her childhood was spent on the family farm near Crystal City. After graduation from high school, she moved to Winnipeg to attend the University of Manitoba, from which she received Bachelor of Arts (1964), Bachelor of Social Work (1965), and Master of Social Work (1966) degrees.

She worked at the Children's Home of Winnipeg (1966-1973), the Children's Aid Society of Central Manitoba at Portage la Prairie (1973-1978), and the Society's group home (1978-1982). In 1982 she was instrumental in creating one of the first, long-term residential treatment programs in Portage la Prairie, Quest Group Home Incorporated. It became the only Level V treatment program outside of Winnipeg. Quest was her passion and vision. She embodied a truly deep sense of love and communal responsibility for the in-depth treatment, safety and care of vulnerable adolescent girls. She created a sense of family and belongingness for countless girls, who had never experienced such unconditional love. She became their mom, teacher, advocate, and mentor. All who knew her, and were touched by her empathy, compassion and unconditional love were truly blessed.

In her personal life, she enjoyed travel, pet cats and dogs, sportscars, and a cottage at Silver Harbour.

She died at Winnipeg on 4 September 2025.
