Memorable Manitobans: James Lloyd “Jim” Evans (1879-1918)

Merchant, soldier, diarist.

Born in North Wales on 17 March 1879, he fought in the Boer War before immigrating to Canada and settled at Miniota around 1902. There, he worked as a hardware and lumber merchant. In 1904, he returned to Mold, Wales to marry Edith Eleanor Price (1880-1969) and bring her back to Miniota where they subsequently had three children. He commanded the Miniota Troop of the 12th Manitoba Dragoons from its founding in 1906 and he was a member of the Knights of Pythias and Sons of England.

In 1914, he enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force and went overseas. He was killed in action on 1 September 1918. A collection of his letters to his wife, held by the Canadian War Museum, were published privately as My Darling Girl: Wartime Letters of James Lloyd Evans 1914-1918 (1999).
