Memorable Manitobans: Mary Duncan (1870-1940)

Educator.

Born at Drayton, Ontario on 30 May 1870, where she received training as a teacher and taught school for twenty years. Following the death of her father, for whom she had been housekeeper, she moved to The Pas in August 1914 to become Principal of The Pas High School (1914-1922) and The Pas School (1922-1937). She retired in 1937 due to ill health and continued to reside at The Pas until her death there on 12 July 1940. She was buried in The Pas Lakeside Cemetery. She is commemorated by Mary Duncan School in The Pas.
