Memorable Manitobans: Alfred C. Down (1885-?)

Provincial Manager, National Life Assurance Co.

Born at Hamilton, Bermuda, 1 April 1885. Son of Samuel and Millicent Down. Married Hazel A.Young of Bermuda, October, 1907. Has one son and a daughter. Was educated at Private School, Somerset, Bermuda. Entered the service of Sun Life Assurance Co., 1906. Started in the Insurance business in Bermuda. Was pioneer agent for The National Life in British West Indies, 1908; Manager at Regina, Saskatchewan,1910-1917; Superintendent of Agencies in Ontario, 1919; came to Winnipeg in 1920. Member of the AF & AM (Northern Light, No. 10 and Prince Alfred, Bermuda). Member of All Saints, Anglican Church. Address: Ste. C., Plaza Apartments, Winnipeg. Some facts re National Life Assurance Co. Founded in 1899. Subscribed Capital $1,000,000. Over 70% of the investments of the company are made up of government and municipal bonds. In the history of the company not a dollar of principal or interest on any of the invested funds of the company has been lost—a record which is unsurpassed. The National Life policyholders receive 90% of the profits arising from participating policies, and have, as additional security, the $1,000,000 capital subscribed by the shareholders. The business issued for the first seven months of 1915, exceeds the issued business for the same period in 1924 by over 35%.
