Memorable Manitobans: Alfred C. Down (1885-?)Business manager. Born at Hamilton, Bermuda on 1 April 1885, son of Samuel and Millicent Down, he was educated at a private school at Somerset, Bermuda. In 1906, he entered the service of the Sun Life Assurance Company and was a pioneering agent for the National Life Assurance Company in British West Indies, in 1908. He came to Canada and was Manager at Regina, Saskatchewan (1910-1917) and Superintendent of Agencies in Ontario (1919) before coming to Winnipeg in 1920 as Provincial Manager. In October 1907, he married Hazel A. Young (?-?) of Bermuda. They had a son and a daughter. He was a member of the AF & AM (Northern Light No. 10 and Prince Alfred, Bermuda) and All Saints Anglican Church. In 1925, he lived in Suite C of the Plaza Apartments, Winnipeg.
