Mabel Donald Davis

Bus driver.
Born at Gonor on 17 July 1901, only child of Laura Cooper (1884-1921) and George Donald (1874-1953), her father operated a bus and boat livery business at Lockport. In 1917, he bought a Ford Model T bus for use in transporting passengers around the area. From 1917 to 1931, she drove it on his behalf, becoming what is believed to be the first woman in Canada to work as a bus driver. On 8 November 1922, she married Richmond “Jake” Davis (1897-1981) at St. Andrews and they lived with her father. She died at Selkirk on 23 October 1986 and was buried in the St. Andrews-on-the-Red Cemetery.
