Memorable Manitobans: Gerald Richard Joseph Cobbe (1927-2004)Plumber, MP (1968-1972). Born at Kenton on 22 March 1927, son of Alice and Whittle Cobbe, he was raised at Makaroff until 1939 when his family moved to MacGregor. He moved to Carman in 1946 to work as a plumber, then to Portage la Prairie in 1954 where he founded Cobbe’s Plumbing and Heating. He was a member of the Portage city council and was elected to Parliament at the 1968 federal general election, serving a single term until being defeated in the 1972 general election. He was Assistant Grain Commissioner for Manitoba from 1973 to 1979. He died at Portage la Prairie on 27 September 2004 and was buried in the Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
