Memorable Manitobans: Gwen Viola Pucci Buccini (1948-2026)

Educator, community activist.

Born at Winnipeg on 9 June 1948, daughter of Margery Sarah Routly (1909-1970) and John Ralph Pucci (1906-1962), she attended St. Mary's School and graduated from St. Mary's Academy in 1967, where she was Head Girl. She worked as a teacher and librarian for 33 years. On 1 August 1970, she married Dominic Buccini and they had a son and two daughters, including Anthony Oreste Buccini (1985-2017), before separating.

In 1998, she founded Tabs for Wheelchairs that grew to a province-wide project that involved more than 100 schools, 200 business and community groups, and many people. It provided over 70 specialized wheelchairs to children in need. She also founded Open Arms Independent Living to raise funds for a group home. Her community service was recognized by a Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal (2002) and Winnipeg 150 Medal (2025), and she was a YMCA-YWCA Women of Distrinction nominee (2013).

She died at Winnipeg on 15 April 2026.
